 Abseiling / Rock Landing

ABSEILING / ROCK LANDING

Abseiling comes first among the sports that appeal to extreme sports enthusiasts. Those who want to go with the peaks of adrenaline sports intertwined with nature "rock landing / rappelling" for this sport, also known as Turkey and has many years of traveling to certain routes in the world. Although abseiling sport, which has similar characteristics with mountaineering, is easily learned by everyone, having a good condition during climbing is one of the technical points.

What is Abseiling?

Especially the extreme sports that have emerged in recent years are closely followed by adrenaline enthusiasts; Abseiling is one of those sports. Abseiling, which is usually referred to by its English name, has been translated into Turkish as "rock descent".

Abseiling, mixed with mountaineering, refers to climbing and descending on rocks of certain heights with the help of a rope from top to bottom and from bottom to top. Abseiling sport, which can be done professionally or as an amateur, ends after a controlled landing.

How is Abseiling done?

Abseiling consists of climbing and descending with certain equipment. As in every sport, there are certain techniques in abseiling. Especially amateur climbers need to move on to real sports fields after learning and developing these techniques in artificial fields. Maintaining balance by strengthening the wrist and ankles are the basic teachings for abseiling. In this sport, which consists of two different parts, climbing and descending, the movements made during climbing should also be applied to the return. Therefore, how the return will be after any climb or movement should also be considered.

Abseiling can be performed in indoor or outdoor spaces that require balance, condition and flexibility. There are climbing sections in gyms for amateurs. If you have just started this sport, you can train here to develop a unique technique and gain fitness.

Abseiling sport, like any extreme sport, involves a certain amount of danger. Although rock climbing is done with the help of ropes and protection of the athletes in the event of a fall, real rock fragments can injure athletes. For this reason, it is recommended that amateur athletes do not go on the field without concentrating on a certain technique.

Materials Required for Abseiling

It is necessary to use abseiling equipment for safe rock climbing.

Coin

A coin is equipment that attaches to rock crevices and enables movement during climbing. Coins can be divided into different segments, lifting weights from 500 kilograms to 2500 kilograms. Profile, universal style, ring and leaf coins are used in rocks of different depths.

Wedge

The wedges, which serve the same function as coins, are lighter. Wedges that can be attached to rock cavities without the aid of a hammer consist of metal tips and ropes attached to these ends.

Wedge Grips

The wedge handles, which are attached to the wedges using wire and rope, are shaped according to the movements of the athletes. Wedge handles with rope are more advantageous than those using wires with their flexible structure.

Ropes

The indispensable ropes of abseiling sport. The ropes preventing injuries to athletes during the fall are flexible enough to be compatible with the human body. Dynamic threads and static auxiliary ropes have different properties. While the diameter of the full ropes is around 10 mm, the diameter of the auxiliary ropes is 8.5 mm.

Helmet

Helmet is one of the equipments that provide protection for athletes and must be used in case of any fall. Thanks to the helmets, you can be protected from both the impact of the fall and possible injuries caused by rock fragments.

Climbing Shoes

Shoes known as kata or friction should be used in this sport, which makes it easier to balance during climbing. The shoes that keep the friction at the maximum level are also very flexible. Shoes are also varied according to whether the rocks are inclined or steep. Lightweight when training on smooth walls in gyms; Heavy models should be preferred for real rocks with inclined structure.

Carabiners

Carabiners that help ensure safety during climbing can be preferred with or without a lock. Carabiners are lightweight attachment equipment, however, they are durable. It is generally chosen based on how many kilograms of weight you can lift.

When is Abseiling done?

After learning the abseiling techniques, it is necessary to pay attention to the periods of the year. The most suitable period for amateurs in abseiling sport, which can be done by professional and experienced athletes in all seasons, is the spring months. Amateurs should prefer periods that are not too hot or too cold for abseiling, where experience is very important; potential risks should be avoided.
